I came to Break Point, Netflix’s tennis docuseries, with the knowledge that:
It was from the same producers as F1: Drive to Survive, the F1 racing docuseries
A lot of people got into F1 after watching it
Getting into racing is not a thing I desire, but tennis, I like the idea of tennis. Catching random Australian Open matches with coffee before work is a treat. Seeing that a final will be on and tuning in not knowing anything, but “this is fun to watch” is a thing I occasionally do. But I don’t get it like I do other sports.
So I went into this series to be entertained, but maybe to sow the seeds of deeper understanding that are required to really follow a sport. I did the same thing with soccer via fantasy EPL a bunch of years ago. Through five episodes it is mostly working. The second half of the series doesn’t release till June, but I am already planning to watch it. Maybe after that it will be getting tennis apps on my phone and subbing the tennis feed on The Athletic.
